Last week I posed about my GAME plan. Click Here
to read my plan. This week I need to put my affairs in order to make my GAME
plan work in my classroom.
One of the most important parts of my plan
requires iPads or laptops. The biggest obstacle
is to get my iPads. I still do not have my class iPads, although the district
has had them since school has started. I have talked with my principals and she
is working with IT and the superintendent to have them to me soon. I was told I
would not receive classroom computers this year, because I am getting iPads. I was
fine with this; however, it is the fourth month of school and still no iPads or
classroom computers.
I have been making due by checking out the mobile
laptop carts. They work, however, they are slow and it takes much longer when
everyone is logged on to the server.
I feel that this obstacle is about to be
resolved. I cannot dwell on the
negative, I need to be proactive and still work with my students to make their
education the best it can be.
For my first goal I have done the following to
help prepare myself:
I have started to research blogs, wikis, and other
online collaboration sites that do not require students to have an email. If
you know of any PLEASE let me know. I
also am working with my students on real life vs. make believe. This concept is hard for my students. We will spend each day working with
non-fiction works.
My students are very familiar with Google Image
because they use it for previous lessons. They use it often in school via
mobile laptops.
My biggest need in order to make this lesson/goal successful is to find an online collaboration tool that my district will allow. Again, if you have any ideas please let me know.
My biggest need in order to make this lesson/goal successful is to find an online collaboration tool that my district will allow. Again, if you have any ideas please let me know.
My second goal is much more doable. I will have students
working with Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Publisher. According to cast.org (2011) all students
learn differently and need different types of instruction and/or materials to
be successful. This lesson will help students express themselves in different ways.
Students who need to write/type can do so in word. Students who need graphs and
diagrams can use Excel. Visual students can use Powerpoint or Publisher.
The materials I will need in order to make the
lessons/goals successful are below:
·
Teacher text book
·
Student text book
·
Paper
·
Pencil
·
SMARTboard
·
Laptops or iPads
·
Teacher laptop
·
Internet
·
Microsoft programs
·
Network for students to save work
·
Reading block of time to teach each
program
I also plan to research more “fun” ways to use
each program. I have used Google to look at projects and have found a few blogs
that list classroom project ideas.
I feel I have a good start to my GAME Plan. Any
ideas or suggestion are more than welcome. Thanks a million!

Pru,
ReplyDeleteYour school district is providing an iPad for each of your students? The district currently has the iPads, but you have not seen them yet? That must be so frustrating, but I admire your positive outlook!
Kidblog.org is a free blogging site that does not require students to have an e-mail address. Also, wikispaces is free and does not require students to have an e-mail address. I use both of these with my students.
I love your idea of having students choose between Word, Powerpoint, Excel, and Publisher. I have not used Microsoft Publisher before. What will students do on there? How will it be beneficial?
I look forward to hearing back from you!

ReplyDeleteI am supposed to have Three iPads for my classroom. I have 9 students grades K-4 and 9 preschoolers. I want to use my iPads with my small group projects.
Our district received them with Special Ed. funds. There are supposed to be 10 in the district for SpEd uses.
Thank you so much for the links! I have checked them out. I love kidblogs! Thanks, more than you know!

ReplyDeleteI can totally relate to your frustrations. Two years ago I got the opportunity to tour the state to select the devices we wanted for our one-to-one technology grant (however, they didn't listen to us anyway). They purchased netbooks for the students in the 5th-12th grades and we were supposed to get them in the beginning of the school year. However, they gave them to the jr/sr high first and then had to use ours as replacements as kids broke theirs because they took them home (again, something they didn't listen to us on-we said that particular group of 6th graders weren't ready for them, especially at the beginning of the year). We kept asking and begging and pleading, and then we finally asked for a timeline of when we would be getting them and the superintendant at that time was not aware that we hadn't been given our netbooks yet. After learning of this they gave us 6....with one charger. We used them, raved about how great they were, but also stressed how much more we could do with them if they weren't always dead (due to the one charger) or if we had more. It took a few months but now we have 26 in our rooms, I even have 2 extra in my room and an iPad!!
I have recently started using Prezi with my students. For some students it did NOT require them to have an email, but for most of them it did. It was really random. Luckily my kids do have emails through the school (we just hadn't told them about having these until this project) but it is set up so that they can ONLY email teachers.
I really love my school Edmodo site. It was the one thing I was able to convince my parents to trust without much hassle.
Some of the perks:
You can have your school name in your domain. This allows teachers to have administrative rights, determining who may join a specific group or class, and deleting or editing comments if needed. Teachers can moderate comments, meaning view them before they are posted, or simply get a copy of the comment and who sent it directly to your email. (This was interesting, I just had a kid post a comment in Edmodo and all of a sudden, my email notification popped up on the SmartBoard and the kids knew whatever they posted went directly to the teacher.)
There are parent codes so they can monitor their child's Edmodo account as well.
Not only does this have a safe classroom environment, you can also create quizes and assignments and kids can submit through Edmodo. Quizes can be graded by the computer and then the students see their grade in their Edmodo grade book (I just transfer the grades into my official PowerSchool gradebook later) and they also see a graph to help them visualize what their scores mean.
Will your school be purchasing Microsoft items for the iPads or will you have to use the Mac versions? I have a reader downloaded onto my iPad that allows me to view and edit Word documents because of a free app I found one day.
One blog I love is www.ilearntechnology.com You can search this great technology resource for various devices, such as iPads, or you can search for content specific topics. I've found links to games, simulations, tips to use Google Earth, and more.
I am interested to hear of other applications for students to use without emails, I'll be checking back to your site to see what others post. :)

DeleteI am glad you have your netbooks now.
I still have not been given a timeline!
I am hoping to get the Microsoft for iPads. I do not know, as I do not have them! Grrrr!!!
Our 5th and 6th graders now have email through Gmail. We, our district, uses Google Apps for education. We still have "Government issue" emails, with endings @shelby.k12.mt.us The kids now have them. They can ONLY email teachers and only receive emails from teachers. They cannot email each other. It is an experiment. I am hoping to get my students to get emails. But I have a lot to tackle first.
I have used Prezi with students, when I taught 5th and 6th grade. I now have the younger ones.
I really, really want to use ipads with my preschoolers. I think this can open up amazing amounts of possibilities.
Thanks for the links/ideas.
You are so SMART!
Pru,
ReplyDeleteThat is so frustrating that you are not able to have your iPads yet! Do they not realize how they will benefit and help your students? The iPad is such a great example of an assistive technology tool. I hope that you get them or your computers soon. Maybe they will give you both since it has taken so long for your to get your iPads.
I feel your pain about trying to find wikis and blogs that the district and parents will approve of. I liked Christie's idea of using Kidblogs. I will have to look into that because I have not heard of it before. But I had a couple of people suggest it to me on my blog as well.
I feel that both goals that you have presented are good goals to have for your students. I do think that your second goal like you said is more doable, but once you find a good collaboration site then both will become very doable.
Hi Pru,
ReplyDeleteMy teaching partner uses Edmodo for his class website (wiki), but our students are given a gmail account with our school domain when they are in third grade, so I use Google Sites. We prefer all of the awesome collaborative tools that Google offers (i.e. docs, presentations, spreadsheets, forms, etc.) They really are, in my opinion, the best bundle of collaborative technology tools out there.
Getting back to Google Sites; you can create a space where only those you invite are able to access it, or make it public to the world. We can create discussion posts and blogs within the site and kids can link to their own portfolios right from our class website. Again, any protections can be made with the sharing tools. Kids' blogs are open for everyone on the site to read, but their portfolios are kept between the students, their parents and me. They can also embed any projects they do within the site. Again, Google Apps come with a whole swath of tools that can be easily shared and integrated.
I hope things work out with the iPads.
Chad
I love Google!!! My school uses Google Apps for Education. My school website is through there. I use Google Docs like it is my best friend. I have not used it much with kids. This would be a good way to start to use online collobration in a 'safe' way. Depending on emails and log ins....

ReplyDeleteI do not have an answer for your question about iPads. I know my principal does!
I am going to try kidblogs and see what happens!!! I guess I could get in trouble, but if we do it all in class then I don't think it will be that bad.
The second goal is much more doable. I hope to do them!
